- This Sacrament is called Confirmation because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace.
- The essential rite of Confirmation is the anointing with Sacred Chrism (oil mixed with balsam and consecrated by the Bishop), which is done by the laying on of the hand of the minister who pronounces the sacramental words proper to the rite.
Confirmation is normally received in the Parish where one lives. In the Archdiocese of Sydney, children are usually confirmed around the age of nine or ten years. The ordinary minister of Confirmation is the Bishop.
At St Mary’s Cathedral, there are one or two special celebrations of Confirmation each year for adults who have not yet received Confirmation. Preparation for this sacrament is usually carried out in the Parish of residence.
